This makes me upset. Cheerleading is a sport, whether you like it or not! Get it through your head. We work probably twice as hard as any other sports. We lift girls and you lift footballs. We need and demand respect. Just because we look good while we’re doing our sport doesn’t mean it’s not a sport!

I don’t equate my support for the troops as an endorsement of the invasion. I think Bush, Cheney, the whole lot, should be up on war crimes charges for lying the nation into this mess. If I support continuing (for now), it’s because I’m still not convinced that progress is impossible, and I’m still not convinced that leaving wouldn’t leave things even worse, possibly far worse, for Iraqis and maybe for more than just Iraqis. I’ve asked the “anti-war” contingent here repeatedly for a convincing case that staying will only make things worse. Nobody has responded with a convincing argument. I’ve gotten little more than “I’m not worried about that” or “things will get worse no matter what we do.” Without substantiation. “What, me worry?” What kind of idiot says that? Very often, doing the right thing means doing things you don’t want to do, and doing those things with people you hate. I went to a funeral yesterday, for my brother in law. I didn’t have to go. I didn’t have to stay. I was offered graceful exit opportunities several times during the day. I was there with friends and family, but some of those people hated each other — a sorry fact that periodically intruded under the inevitable stresses. However, by and large, we all worked together to try do right by the memory of a dead man, a man everyone there knew as highly imperfect, but still far from evil. And we all faced as much reality together as we could individually stand. In Japanese funeral services, this involves pairs from family and acquaintances each using pairs of chopsticks to lift fragments of bone from a metal crematorium tray into the urn. Any residual belief that you’ll see the deceased again is solidly consigned to a jarful of calcium carbonate fragments. And YOU are doing the consigning. So you see it: All life ends, including your own. Next week, it could be your own bone fragments being lifted by a pair of chopsticks by some of the same people. You can’t know. Most Americans have finally had to shed their fond delusions about invading Iraq. Now, it’s about death, violent death, and about what, if anything, could make those deaths worthwhile. Like it or not, we’re going to have to work this out as a people even as we hate each other. To turn away and shrug at this point would be the ultimate drunk-driving hit-and-run. It would be to speed off together while nursing a few bruises and lacerations, bickering pettily about who started it, whose fault it is, who opened the bottle, who “forced” it on others, even as blood runs in the gutters at the scene of the crime — OUR crime, to an undeniable extent. Go ahead: Say it wasn’t YOUR crime — because you weren’t at the wheel, after all — while stridently maintaining that a clean getaway gives you chances to be a part of punishing those responsible. Sure, say it. As far as I’m concerned, you’re just another bickering teenager in the back seat.
@ Garrett, I just remember Koogle by the commercials and I think we were force fed it once in a while. Was it peanutbutter with chocolate? I think it’s similar to that stuff still around my nephew eats it – nutella – except that’s hazelnuts and chocolate.
